I.Trench Coat
This specification describes a prescribed item for sworn exempt members worn over the blouse with the Class A Uniform only during inclement weather.
  • A.Design
    Double-breasted trench coat with zip-out Thinsulate lining, half-raglan with shoulder epaulets, button front, self-goods belt with leather buckle, lower sleeve straps with leather buckle, with right front yoke, and back yoke single back vent, fully lined with inside vertical welt openings.
  • B.Materials
    • 1.The outer shell will be constructed of 60% cotton, 40% polyester CVC blend with a Teflon finish. The weight shall be 5.92 oz. per square yard.
    • 2.The permanent lining will be a 100% nylon plain weave with a weight of 1.8 oz per square yard.

    Dark navy blue
  • D.Construction
    • 1.Front yoke: Right side only, with button and buttonhole in lower-front corner, 5/16” top stitching on finished edges, attached at shoulder and armhole.
    • 2.Cut-Through Front Pockets: Vertical welt opening, with 5/16” top stitching, no pocket bag, access to lining opening: 7-1/2”.
    • 3.Back Yoke: One-piece, loose attached at raglan seam, neck and side seams, folder hem finishes 7/16”, 5/16” top stitching on back of raglan seam.
    • 4.Sleeve Strap: Inserted into the inseam of sleeve, finished strap width: 1-3/4” bottom edge of strap finishes approximately 3” from lower finished sleeve, buckle is stitched to sleeve out seam.
    • 5.Collars: Two piece collar, collar ends finish 3-3/4”, center back collar width: 3”, lapel ends finish 5”, self goods hanger loop is inserted into the center of back neck seam, between top collar and collar stand.
    • 6.Belt: Two piece self-goods belt with leather buckle and loop stabilizer strap with 18L buttons/buttonholes to secure to belt loop on coat, the belt finishes 2” in width with 5/16” top stitching.
    • 7.Zip-Out Liner: 100% nylon quilted Thinsulate insulation 100 gram, filler 65%, polyolefin 35% polyester. The lining for zip-out liner same specification from permanent lining.

    • 8.Zip-Out Sleeve: Nap back satin 52% cotton, 48% rayon.
    • 9.Buttonhole Thread: Gimp 96 stitches per inch, button stitching shank.
    • 10.Stitching: Generally, there will be 10–12 stitches per inch. Safety stitches will be 8–10 stitches per inch. All stitching will be even and uniform, all shell and permanent lining seams shall be stitched with #50 polyester thread safety stitch. The zip-out liner will be stitched with five thread safety stitch #70 polyester.
    • 11.Top Stitching: 5/16” top stitching fronts-collar-backs-outside seam of sleeve-sides-armholes-belts-welts.
    • 12.Buttons: All buttons will bear the text "Chicago City Police" and the seal of the City of Chicago. The buttons will have a "Mirra Brite" finish. The epaulets and front yoke (gun patch) will be secured with 26 Ligne buttons. The 8 front buttons and an additional lapel button under the right collar will be 40 Ligne.
    • 13.Epaulets: Will be military style removable type, two plies of the basic shell fabric plus interlining and then double stitched. Epaulets will be 2" wide at the shoulder and at the point. The point of the epaulet will finish at the collar joining seam of the coat. The epaulet will be folded in half and held down with a self-keeper which is bar tacked at the shoulder seam.
    • 14.Star Patch: Cut from the same material as the coat, rectangular in shape with two metal eyelets. The patch will be 2" in length and 1" wide. The distance between the metal eyelets will be 1 1/4". The patch will be placed on the left breast and sewn down on all sides.
    • 15.Rank Insignia: Full-size rank insignia will be centered on the epaulet 1/2" from the shoulder seam.
    • 16.Patches: The prescribed Department shoulder patch for exempt members with dark gold letters and dark gold merrowed borders will be stitched on the outer-left sleeve, centered 3/4" below the shoulder seam. The prescribed Department Chicago flag patch will be stitched on the outer-right sleeve, centered 1-1/4" below the right shoulder seam.
    Service bars/stars and nameplates will not be worn with the trench coat.
  • E.Manufacturer's Specifications/Label
    The coat will be permanently labeled with the manufacturer, country of origin, and size. The label will state that this garment is approved for use by Chicago Police Department members. The label will include the date of manufacture. No manufacturer or representative may suggest that a garment is an approved Chicago Police Department prescribed garment without prior inspection of a completed sample and written authorization of the Director, Research and Development Division, Chicago Police Department.
