Procedures For Reporting Lost And Found Passports

I.Purpose
This directive updates procedures for reporting lost and found passports.
II.General Information
Passports belong to the issuing government, not the individual who lost the passport. Department members will only return a found passport to a representative of the respective government, and only after the individual displays proper credentials.
III.Procedures
  • A.Lost Passports
    • 1.When a Department member is notified in person that an individual wants to report a lost passport, the Department member will prepare a Lost and Found Case Report (CPD-11.408) using the following IUCR code and classifications:
      • a.IUCR code: 5093
      • b.Primary Classification:Non-Criminal
      • c.Secondary Classification: Lost Passport.
    • 2.A Victim Information Notice, indicating the RD number, will be given to the reporting individual and will serve as documentation that the Chicago Police Department has been notified of the loss.
    • 3.Individuals will be directed to their respective consulate office for a replacement passport or further assistance (Consulate List Web Site can be accessed from the CLEAR homepage).
  • B.Found Passports
    • 1.When a Department member is notified in person that an individual wants to report a found passport, the Department member will prepare a Lost and Found Case Report using the following IUCR code and classifications:
      • a.IUCR code: 5094
      • b.Primary Classification:Non-Criminal
      • c.Secondary Classification: Found Passport.
    • 2.A Victim Information Notice, indicating the RD number, will be given to the reporting individual and will serve as documentation that the Chicago Police Department has been notified of the found property.
    • 3.The member will inventory the found passport consistent with the procedures outlined in the Department directive entitled "Inventory System for Property Taken into Custody."
    • 4.The member will notify the appropriate consulate office (Consulate List Web Site can be accessed from the CLEAR homepage) that their property has been found and inventoried and can be returned to a representative of the consulate office displaying proper credentials.
