I.AWARD MEDALLIONS – CONSTRUCTION
  • A.Ribbon Material
    Nylon and Dacron composition "campaign" ribbon material.
  • B.Ribbon Hasp
    • 1.Affixed to the top of the ribbon will be a pin with a closing hasp the same width as the ribbon.
    • 2.The pin and closing hasp will be attached to the ribbon in such a way as to not be visible from the front.
  • C.Medallion Material
    Assorted colored metals.
II.AWARD MEDALLIONS - INDIVIDUAL AWARDS
  • A.Police Medal
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: dark blue and gold. Centered will be a dark blue stripe measuring approximately 5/8" wide. There will be a gold stripe measuring approximately 3/8" wide on either side.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A silver ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the silver ring will be a silver metal medallion measuring approximately 1 3/8” in diameter.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: silver metal.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be round. At the top and following the contour of medallion will be the words "POLICE MEDAL." At the bottom will be the word "HONOR." Within the circumference of the circle and to the left will be a replica of "Walking Liberty." To the right will be a placard. Within the placard will be a raised five-pointed star. Above the star will be the word "CHICAGO" and below the star will be the word "POLICE." Below the placard will be olive branches. All lettering will be raised.
  • B.Superintendent’s Award of Valor
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: red and white. Centered will be a white stripe measuring approximately 7/16" wide. There will be a red strip measuring approximately 7/16" wide on either side.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 2 ½” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A bronze ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the bronze ring will be a bronze metal medallion measuring approximately 1 ¾” long by 1 ¼” wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: bronze metal.
      • b.Design: The medallion will have olive branches encircling an eagle with wings spread. The eagle will be perched above a raised square. Within the square will be a placard with a five pointed raised star. Within the placard above the star will be the word "CHICAGO" and below the star will be the word "POLICE." At the bottom of the medallion will be the word "VALOR." All lettering will be raised.
  • C.Superintendent’s Award of Merit
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: dark blue and white. Centered will be a white stripe measuring approximately 7/16" wide. There shall be a dark blue strip measuring approximately 7/16" wide on either side.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 2 ½” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A bronze ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the bronze ring will be a bronze metal medallion measuring approximately 1 ¾” long by 1” wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: bronze metal.
      • b.Design: The medallion will have an eagle with wings spread perched above a placard. Within the placard will be a five pointed raised star. Above the star will be the word "CHICAGO" and below the star will be the word "POLICE." At the top of the medallion but below the eagle will be the word “MERIT.” At the bottom of the medallion will be a half circle of olive branches. All lettering will be raised.
  • D.Police Blue Star
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: light blue and white. Centered will be a white stripe measuring approximately 5/8" wide. There will be a light blue strip measuring approximately 3/8" wide on either side.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A silver ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the silver ring will be a silver metal medallion measuring approximately 1 ½” long by 1 ½” wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: silver metal.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be a pentagon-shaped plate. Within the plate will be a five pointed raised star with the points extending beyond the edges of the plate. Centered within the five pointed star and within a circle will be a second, smaller raised star. Each star point will be divided into two equal halves. Each half will be colored with alternating colors of navy blue and light blue. Above the smaller star will be the words “CHICAGO POLICE” and below the smaller star will be the words “BLUE STAR AWARD.” All lettering will be raised.
  • E.Police Blue Shield
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: light blue and white. Centered will be a 1/8" wide vertical white stripe. On each side of the white stripe will be a 9/16" light blue stripe. On each end will be a 1/16" white stripe. This ribbon is similar in size and design to the Korean Service Medal.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A silver ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the silver ring will be a silver metal medallion measuring approximately 1 5/8” long by 1 1/8” wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: silver metal.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be in the shape of a sworn member’s cap shield. The medallion will feature the Seal of the City of Chicago as displayed on the cap shield. The seal will be raised. At the bottom of the seal will be the words “CHICAGO POLICE,” and underneath these words will be the words “BLUE SHIELD AWARD.”
  • F.Superintendent's Award of Tactical Excellence
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: dark blue and white. Centered shall be a 3/16" wide vertical white stripe. On each side of the white stripe shall be shall four alternating 1/8" dark blue and 3/16" white stripes. This ribbon is Blackinton Model RC-33.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8” long by 1 3/8” wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A gold ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the gold ring will be a gold metal medallion measuring approximately 1 5/8” long by 1 7/16” wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: gold metal with a hi-glo finish.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be a hexagram "sunburst" design. In the center will be a raised Seal of the City of Chicago. Under the Seal of the City of Chicago will be a raised half-circle banner for engraving. Within the banner in blue lettering will be the words “TACTICAL EXCELLENCE.”
  • G.Thomas E. Wortham IV Military and Community Service Award
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: medium green, black, and bluebird blue. Centered will be a 1/4" wide vertical black stripe. On the wearer's right side of the black stripe will be a 1/2" vertical medium green stripe. On the wearer's left side of the black stripe will be a 1/2" vertical bluebird blue stripe.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8" long by 1 3/8" wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A gold ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the gold ring will be a gold metal medallion measuring approximately 2 3/4" long by 2" wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: gold metal with a hi-glo finish.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be a six-pointed “sunburst” design, with two banners for engraving located near the top and a full color seal of the City of Chicago located in the center. The top banner will be the words “CHICAGO POLICE” and in the second banner will be the words “THOMAS E. WORTHAM IV.” Above the Seal will be the words “MILITARY AND COMMUNITY SERVICE” and beneath the seal will be the word “AWARD.” Top and bottoms words will be light blue in color separated by an inlaid light blue enamel star.
  • H.William Powers Leadership Award
    • 1.Ribbon Drape:
      • a.Color: yellow, blue, and white. Centered will be a 1/4" vertical yellow stripe. On each side of the yellow stripe will be a 1/4" vertical blue stripe. On each side of the blue stripe will be a 1/4" vertical white stripe.
      • b.Design: A distinctive ribbon measuring approximately 1 3/8" long by 1 3/8" wide will be folded and tapered at the bottom. A gold ring will be attached to the tapered bottom. Suspended from the gold ring will be a gold metal medallion measuring approximately 2 3/4" long by 2" wide.
    • 2.Medallion:
      • a.Color: gold metal with a hi-glo finish.
      • b.Design: The medallion will be a six-pointed “sunburst” design, with two banners for engraving located near the top and a full color Seal of the City of Chicago located in the center. The top banner will be the words “WILLIAM POWERS” and in the second banner will be the words “LEADERSHIP AWARD.” Above the seal will be the words “EXEMPLARY SERVICE” and beneath the seal will be the word “DEDICATION.” Top and bottom words will be black in color separated by an inlaid black enamel star.
III.Samples
Completed samples will be submitted to the Chicago Police Department, Research and Development Division, 3510 South Michigan Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60653, for instructions before a purchase can be issued.
