I.PURPOSE
This directive informs members:
  • A.of the events planned for this year’s tribute to the Chicago Police Department.
  • B.that 06 May through 13 May 2018 has been designated as Police Recognition Week in Chicago.
II.24 HOUR VIGIL AT GOLD STAR FAMILIES MEMORIAL AND PARK
  • A.The Chicago Police Department Honor Guard will be conducting a 24 Hour Vigil at Gold Star Families Memorial and Park on Monday, 30 April 2018. The Honor Guard will begin the guard detail at 0001 hours and will conclude the vigil at 2359 hours.
  • B.Honor Guard Members will ceremoniously place any flowers or wreaths that may be brought to the vigil.
  • C. Inquiries regarding the 24 Hour Vigil may be directed to the Special Activities Section at PAX 0304 or Bell 5-5844.
III.SAINT JUDE MEMORIAL MARCH AND SERVICE
  • A.The Saint Jude Memorial March and Service will be held on Sunday, 06 May 2018. Units will assemble at Solidarity Drive between Museum Campus Drive and the Adler Planetarium between 0700 to 0740 hours. Step off will be at 0800 hours.
  • B.Immediately following the completion of the march, there will be a brief Interfaith Service held at the reviewing stand in front of the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park.
IV.POLICE RECOGNITION CEREMONY
  • A.The 57th Annual Police Recognition Ceremony and Luncheon will be held on Friday, 11 May 2018, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Drive. The awards will be presented at a luncheon starting at 1200 hours in the Grand Ballroom East Tower.
  • B.Medals will be presented to Department members for heroism and outstanding police service.
  • C.The Richard J. Daley Police Medal of Honor will be presented to an individual whose accomplishments have brought credit to the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department.
  • D.The William Powers Leadership Award will be presented to an exempt member who has displayed dedication to service and a visionary approach to operations and leadership in law enforcement.
  • E.The Thomas Wortham IV Military and Community Service Award is presented to a sworn Department member who is a current or former member of any branch of the United States Armed Services and who has made a significant contribution to the Chicago Police Department and provides a continuing contribution to the community.
  • F.The Superintendent's Tactical Award of Excellence will be presented to a sworn member who has utilized exceptional tactical skills or verbal approaches and techniques to mitigate a deadly force situation resulting in the saving or sustaining of a human life.
  • G.A memorial roll of active officers who have died during the previous year will be shown during the ceremony. This memorial will pay homage to their service and dedication to the City of Chicago and the Chicago Police Department.
  • H.The Master of Ceremonies for the Police Recognition Ceremony will be Bill Kurtis of Kurtis Productions. He has volunteered his services in support of the Department.

  • B.The Annual Run/Walk to Remember will be held on Saturday, 05 May 2018, at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park. Complete information and a link to registration are available at the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation website: www.cpdmemorial.org.
  • C.Illinois salutes its fallen officers on 03 May 2018 in Springfield at the Illinois Police Memorial Ceremony.
  • D.National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. will have its Annual Candlelight Vigil at the police memorial on 13 May 2018.
  • E.On 15 May 2018, the Annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service will take place at the United States Capitol Building.
