I.Wooden Batons, Police Officers
  • A.DESIGN:
    Lathe-turned wood with one end specifically shaped to allow for a firm grip.
  • B.MATERIAL:
    High density, close and straight grain, second growth hickory wood, well seasoned and free from defects and blemishes which might impair its strength or detract from its appearance.
  • C.COLOR:
    High gloss walnut.
  • D.CONSTRUCTION:
    • 1.Shape: Cylindrical in design.
    • 2.Weight:
      • a.Minimum: 12 ounces
      • b.Maximum: 16 ounces
    • 3.Length: 23 inches
    • 4.Diameter: Cylinder turned to a diameter of 1 1/8 inches
    • 5.Finish: The baton shall be smoothly finished, stained with one coat of Pratt and Lambert Company's Oriental Walnut Tonetic Wood Stain or equal, followed by two coats of Pratt and Lambert Company's #61Floor Varnish Gloss or equal.
II.Wooden Batons, Sergeants and Above
  • A.DESIGN:
    Lathe-turned wood with one end specifically shaped to allow for a firm grip.
  • B.MATERIAL:
    High density, close and straight grain, black walnut wood, well seasoned and free from defects and blemishes which might impair its strength or detract from its appearance.
  • C.COLOR:
    High gloss mahogany.
  • D.CONSTRUCTION:
    • 1.Shape: Cylindrical in design.
    • 2.Weight:
      • a.Minimum: 12 ounces
      • b.Maximum: 16 ounces
    • 3.Length: 22 ¾ inches
    • 4.Diameter: Cylinder turned to a diameter of 1 1/8 inches
    • 5.Finish: The baton shall be smoothly finished, stained with one coat of Pratt and Lambert Company's Rich Mahogany Tonetic Wood Stain or equal, followed by two coats of Pratt and Lambert Company's #61 Floor Varnish Gloss or equal.
III.Wooden Baton Holder
  • A.DESIGN:
    A belt mounted baton holder in top-grain leather, leather composite, or woven nylon. The baton holder will have a slotted back to accommodate a 2 ½ inch duty belt.
  • B.MATERIALS:
    • 1.Belt Strap: Top-grain leather, leather composite, or woven nylon.
    • 2.Baton Ring: Nylon or metal.
  • C.COLOR:
    Black
  • D.CONSTRUCTION:
    • 1.Width: 5/8 inch to 1 inch
    • 2.Thickness: Not to exceed 1/8 inch
    • 3.Length: 5 inches
    • 4.Finish; leather, synthetic leather, compressed nylon polymer: Smooth finish.
    • 5.Finish; woven nylon polymer: Ballistic nylon basket weave.
    • 6.Snaps: The baton holder will have one to two metal snaps, silver or black in color.
    • 7.Stitching: May be stitched along both edges. Stitching will be single-line only and be black thread.
    • 8.Edges: Edges will be smooth and burnished.
    • 9.Baton Ring: 1 ½ inches (inside dimension) white or black shatter-proof nylon or white or black metal baton ring.
IV.Wooden Baton Tassels
  • A.DESIGN:
    Top 6 inch loop cord followed by an approximate 5 inch length of 1 1/8 inch hand–braided section of same cord from which there is a continuance of two strands: one approximately 20 ½ inches long to top of mold, the other approximately 22 ½ inches to top of other mold. Cord and tassel will be of the same color.
  • B.MATERIAL:
    Acetate blend cord, of which 50% will be cotton.
  • C.COLOR:
    • 1.Designations:
      • a.White: Superintendent
      • b.Red: Lieutenants and above
      • c.Silvertone: Sergeants
      • d.Royal Blue: Honorary
      • e.Blue Ridge: Retiree (all ranks)
      • f.Gold: Honor Guard
      • g.Black: Deceased/Line of Duty
    • 2.Color Codes:
      • a.A01 White, R01 Black, J04 Red, M03 Royal Blue, M50 Blue Ridge, M60 Silvertone, and D13 Conso Flag Gold.
  • D.CONSTRUCTION:
    • 1.Cord: 113 inches in length, three–ply spun, ¼ inch diameter acetate blend cord.
    • 2.Tassel: One tassel affixed to each end of the cord. Tassels will be 5 inches and consist of two parts: pelmet and skirt.
    • 3.Pelmet: Standard 2 inch, tri-mold wood pelmet with matching acetate outer netting.
    • 4.Skirt: Standard 3 inch, consisting of in excess of 40 two–ply strands of matching acetate blend fringe.
V.Expandable Batons
There are two approved manufacturers of expandable batons: Armament Systems and Procedures (ASP) and Monadnock. The following are the approved expandable batons, scabbard, and baton end caps:
  • A.The ASP expandable baton in 16", 21", 26", and 31" extended lengths are approved equipment. The corresponding model numbers are F16, F21, F26, and F31. Models below 26" are approved for general field use. Models F26 and F31 are approved for Mounted Unit use only.
  • B.The ASP Talon expandable baton in 16", 20", and 24" extended lengths are approved equipment. The corresponding model numbers are T40, T50, and T60. These models are approved for general field use.
  • C.The 9000 series Monadnock AutoLock expandable baton and 2000 series friction lock in 21", 22", and 26" lengths are approved equipment. The 26" model is approved for Mounted Unit use only.
  • D.
    The standard end caps provided with approved expandable batons may be modified with only the following end caps:
    • 1.ASP expandable batons:
      • a.Leverage cap model 2921. Chicago Police logo is permitted on the end cap.
      • b.Baton grip cap 2916. Chicago Police logo is permitted on the end cap.
    • 1.The Monadnock expandable baton can only be modified with the Hindi end cap for Autolock and friction lock models.
VI.Expandable Baton Scabbard
The scabbard must secure to the duty belt and may be a black plain finished polycarbonate holder designed to house the specific expandable baton or a plain black leather or leather composite holder that accommodates the specific expandable baton.
