I.Traffic Safety Vest
  • A.DESIGN
    • 1.All traffic safety vests will comply with ANSI 207-2010 standards.
    • 2.The vendor will supply the Chicago Police Department with 3rd party verification that the vests meet the required ANSI 207-2010 or 107-2010 Class II requirements.
    • 3.All vests will be labeled so as to indicate that they have met these requirements.
  • B.MATERIAL
    • 1.Base fabric will be 100% yellow-green polyester knit mesh with a density to meet ANSI 207-2010 specifications as a fluorescent background material.
    • 2.The minimum fluorescence is 4.0.
    • 3.Shrinkage will be less than 3% warp, 3% fill.
    • 4.Piling will meet a random tumble level minimum 4.5.
    • 5.Garment will have a bias binding around the edges of the vest.
    • 6.The binding will have a 0.5 inch width and will be of high visibility fluorescent fabrics matching the background mesh.
    • 7.A ¾ inch finished ribbon of 100% polyester will be used to form all the finished edges of the vest.
    • 8.The color of the ribbon will be ANSI-approved fluorescent yellow-green.
    • 9.A single heavy duty molded black plastic zipper approximately 7 inches in length will be used for joining the front panels.
  • C.COLOR
    • 1.
      • a.Traffic safety vests will be ANSI-approved fluorescent yellow-green in background color.
      • b.Retroreflective material will be silver in color and 2 inches wide.
      • c.The retroreflective material will be bordered on both sides by a black nylon border ¼ inch wide.
  • D.CONSTRUCTION
    • 1.The base vest will consist of three separate panels and will be designed to have 5-point breakaway ability.
    • 2.The bottom of each front panel will be cut in a single scallop with an approximate apex of 4 ¾ inches.
    • 3.The front panel intersection will be joined by a heavy-duty black zipper approximately 7 inches in length.
    • 4.The zipper will be one point of the 5-point breakaway ability. This point may be either the zipper itself or may be actualized by having the zipper attached to at least one front panel by hook and loop.
    • 5.The cut of the front panels from the top of the zipper up will form a “V” shape with an approximate 8 inch gap at the yoke.
    • 6.The lower corners of the rear panel will be curved and scallop cut, consistent with the outer corners of the front panels. The front panels will be joined to the rear panels with hook and loop.
    • 7.The junction of the front panel with the rear panel on each side will be points of the breakaway design.
    • 8.The hook and loop enclosure pieces will consist of both fluorescent yellow-green background material and silver retroreflective material as required by ANSI 207-2010 or ANSI 107 Class II requirements and will allow for the vest to fit multiple sizing ranges.
  • E.PRINTING DESIGN
    A silk screening method will be used to apply the following words:
    • 1.
      • a.Centered vertically on the right-side front panel (from the perspective of the wearer) on the silver-colored retroreflective material will be the word “CHICAGO” in black block letters, each approximately 1 inch tall. This lettering will extend in descending fashion down the retroreflective material.
      • b.Centered vertically on the left-side front panel (from the perspective of the wearer) on the silver-colored retroreflective material will be the word “POLICE” in black block letters, each approximately 1 inch tall. This lettering will extend in descending fashion down the retroreflective material.
      • c.Centered horizontally on the back panel on the fluorescent yellow-green background material will be the words “CHICAGO POLICE” in black block letters, each approximately 2 ½ inches tall.
    NOTE:
    LETTERING WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH THE ABILITY OF EITHER VEST TO MEET THE REQUIRED ANSI 207-2010 OR ANSI 107-2010 CLASS II REQUIREMENTS.
  • F.MANUFACTURER'S SPECIFICATIONS/LABEL
    The coat will be permanently labeled with the manufacturer, country of origin, and size. The label will state that this garment is approved for use by Chicago Police Department members. No manufacturer or representative may suggest that a garment is an approved Chicago Police Department prescribed garment without prior inspection of a completed sample and written authorization of the Director, Research and Development Division, Chicago Police Department.
