I.Purpose
This directive:
  • A.describes the approved uniform classifications and provides a detailed list of items for each classification.
  • B.satisfies CALEA Law Enforcement Standard Chapter 41.
II.Policy
  • A.The Class A Uniform is the prescribed dress uniform and consists primarily of wool garments.
  • B.The Formal Dress Uniform is the Class A Uniform, with blouse.
    • 1.Members required to wear the Formal Dress Uniform for ceremonial or other designated occasions will not wear soft body armor, a field-equipped utility belt, or carry a baton or handcuffs unless otherwise directed by an exempt or supervisory member.
    • 2.The blouse may be substituted by the reefer or overcoat with prior authorization and notification by the Superintendent.
  • C.Uniformed sworn members are always authorized to wear the Class A Uniform.
  • D.The Class B Uniform is a prescribed uniform similar to the Class A Uniform but without wool garments and with some provisions for field use.
  • E.The Class C Uniform is a field uniform consisting primarily of garments which are specifically designed for field use.
  • F.Unless specifically stated otherwise for a particular event, uniformed sworn members are authorized, at their discretion, to wear the Class B or Class C uniforms instead of the Class A uniform.
  • G.Mixing and matching between uniform groups is prohibited.
  • H.Winter and summer uniform garments will be worn in a manner consistent with the seasonal and temperature requirements described in the Department directive entitled "Personal Appearance, Uniform/Citizen's Dress and Equipment Specifications."
NOTE:
The Chicago Police Department Uniform Configuration Chart (CPD-15.530) provides a summary of the Department uniform configurations. For the complete uniform requirements and configurations, Department members will refer to Uniform and Property directive U04-01, "Personal Appearance, Uniform / Citizen's Dress and Equipment."
