I.Purpose
This directive:
  • A.introduces the Recovered Firearm Information card (CPD-31.233).
  • B.provides definitions for recovered and seized firearms as they related to the information requested by the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS).
  • C.establishes responsibilities and procedures for the use of the Recovered Firearm Information card.
II.General Information
  • A.The State of Illinois has requested that certain statistical information regarding seized and recovered firearms be entered into LEADS. This information will be obtained by Field Inquiry Section personnel from the recovering officer. Gun Registration Section personnel will enter this data into the LEADS system.
  • B.Department members who recover / seize a firearm will continue to follow the procedures outlined in the Department directives entitled "Firearms Taken Into Custody or Turned In" and "Inventory System for Property Taken Into Custody."
  • C.The officer who recovers a weapon will not be required to complete the Recovered Firearm Information card, but will provide information needed by LEADS to Field Inquiry Section personnel. A copy of the Recovered Firearms Information card is reproduced with this directive for informational purposes only.
III.Procedures / Responsibilities
  • A.Field inquiry Section personnel will:
    • 1.complete a Recovered Firearm Information card for each firearm recovered or seized.
    • 2.forward the original Recovered Firearm Information card to the Gun Registration Section.
    • 3.retain the copy of the Recovered Firearm Information card in accordance with the existing Forms Retention Schedule.
  • B.Gun Registration Section personnel will:
    • 1.upon receipt of the Recovered Firearms Information card, enter the firearm information into the LEADS system.
    • 2.retain the original of the Recovered Firearm Information card in accordance with the existing Forms Retention Schedule.
