Request of Evidence Technician Service

I.Purpose
This directive:
  • A.outlines requirements for requesting evidence technician services.
  • B.establishes guidelines for procedures when requesting evidence technician services.
II.Policy
  • A.All requests for Evidence Technician services will be made via City-Wide 2.
  • B.Department members’ requests for evidence technician services will be monitored by evidence technicians and their supervisors.
III.General Information
Procedures for requesting an evidence technician are designed to:
  • A.provide feedback from a dispatcher or an evidence technician to the requesting member about the propriety of specific requests.
  • B.provide evidence technicians with as much information as possible regarding the request.
  • C.inform the requesting member that an evidence technician:
    • 1.will not be assigned for non-evidence-technician functions.
    • 2.will not be assigned for a request that has no evidentiary purpose.
IV.Requesting Members' Responsibilities
When conducting a preliminary or follow-up investigation of a crime scene that may contain physical evidence and evidence technician services are needed, a Department member will:
  • A.make a determination regarding the type and likelihood of recovering physical evidence from the crime scene as delineated in the Department directive entitled “Preliminary Investigations.”
  • B.notify their Zone that they are switching to City-Wide 2 to request an evidence technician.
  • C.switch to City-Wide 2 to request an evidence technician on the scene.
  • D.provide the City-Wide 2 dispatcher with the requested information.
    NOTE:
    It is the responsibility of the requesting member to determine what evidence is available to collect. Requesting the presence of an evidence technician at the scene without explaining the nature of the services needed may result in an evidence technician not being assigned to respond to the scene.
  • E.return to assigned Zone and notify dispatcher.
V.Forensic Services Division
Forensic Services Division supervisors will monitor all requests for evidence technician services and will:
  • A.ask for additional information from a member, when necessary, to clarify the exact nature of a request.
  • B.upon request by a member’s field supervisor, contact that member's field supervisor to explain a request denial.
